Meriam, a mother of two and wife to an American citizen, has been sentenced to 100 lashes and death by hanging on charges of adultery and apostasy (or leaving Islam). Meriam was born to a Muslim father, who left at age 6, but was raised by her Orthodox Christian mother in Western Sudan. Meriam is a graduate of Khartoum University, a medical professional (she studied to be a doctor), and is married to Daniel Wani, a South Sudanese Christian, naturalized U.S. citizen, and New Hampshire resident who is confined to a wheelchair.
In February, an immediate family member, after learning of Meriam's faith and marriage to a Christian man, filed an apostasy claim against her. On February 27th, Meriam and her 20-month-old son, Martin, were arrested and detained by Sudan’s Public Order Police without charge or trial.
Meriam was later charged with adultery and apostasy on March 4th, convicted of both charges on May 11th, and sentenced to 100 lashes and death on May 15th after refusing to recant her faith. Facing Judge al-Khaleefa and teh Sudan Fatwa Council, Meriam boldly declared "I am a Christian, and I will remain a Christian."
Born to a Muslim father, Meriam is considered a Muslim in the eyes of Sudan's Sharia-inspired laws. Not only is Meriam's Christian faith considered an act of apostasy, which is punishable by death, her faithful marriage to Daniel is considered an act of adulterous sexual relation.
On May 22nd, Meriam's legal defense team filed her case with the Khartoum Court of Appeals. Whether or not the Appeals Court will hear Meriam's case has yet to be decided.
In waiting, Meriam gave birth to a beauiiful and reportedly healthy baby daughter, Maya. Though Daniel was barred from witnessing Maya's birth, a photo was recently released to the public showing him overcome by holding his daighter in his arms for the very first time. Both Maya and Martin will stay with Meriam in the Omdurman Federal Woman's prison near Sudan's caiptal city, Khartoum, until she is either released, or the esentences are carried out.
