Help Us Rescue Seven Christians in India Arrested and Imprisoned for a Crime They Didn’t Commit

In 2008, the murder of a Hindu religious leader in India set off a spate of violent attacks on Christian villages in the state of Odisha. These attacks left thousands upon thousands homeless. Looking for a culprit, police arrested a number of Christian men at random and accused them of the murder. Not long after, a radical communist group came forward and claimed responsibility for the killing. By that point, however, the government could not lose face for arresting the wrong men, and radical Hindu groups wanted to keep the Christians locked up regardless.

Almost 10 years later, seven of those men are still behind bars after receiving a life sentence for their “crimes” in 2013. The hearing of their appeal continues to be postponed by the Odisha High Court, despite strong evidence circulating regarding their innocence. All seven men have wives and children who continue to wait for their falsely accused husbands and fathers to come home. Only two of the men, Bijay Kumar Sanseth and Gornath Chalanseth, have been allowed outside the jail for two-week parole periods during the past decade.

Today, ICC needs your help as we call on the government of India to release these seven innocent men and allow them to return to their families once and for all. Will you join us?
